Pakistan’s government is now planning to make Gilgit-Baltistan the fifth province of the country. Two years ago, the powers of a Islamabad-controlled council in Gilgit-Baltistan were given to a local assembly. Pakistan is trying to establish its direct control by seizing the autonomy of its occupied Kashmir (PoK). To strengthen its hold on the area, the government of Pakistan continues to curtail the authority of the autonomous administration of the PoK. The new step is also part of its plan.
POK and Gilgit-Baltistan Union Minister Ali Amin Gandarpur told about the government’s plan during a conversation with journalists in Islamabad on Wednesday. Ali Amin said that Gilgit-Baltistan will be given the status of full province of Pakistan and its representation in both houses will also be decided. This is also a matter of concern for India because Pakistan wants to start many projects of China’s belt and road here. India has already lodged a protest in PoK regarding China’s Belt and Road project.
According to the report of Pakistani media, Ali Amin said that Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan will soon visit the region and officially declare this change.
